The Briar Rose
A year before Pride and Prejudice was published, the Brothers Grimm released Grimm’s Fairy Tales, introducing timeless stories like Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella, and Snow White to international acclaim.
One standout story, Briar Rose, the Grimms' retelling of the Sleeping Beauty legend, inspired countless adaptations: Tchaikovsky’s ballet, Disney’s animated classic, Edward Burne-Jones’s late-19th-century painting series, and now our Regency-meets-21st-century .ai mash-up in the magazine.
To highlight the influence of these tales, we've included links to Burne-Jones’s original artworks, viewable in person at Buscot Park, Oxfordshire, with replicas exhibited at Delaware Art Museum (USA) and Hugh Lane Gallery (Dublin).
For our Briar Rose shoot, .ai provided breathtaking images. After assigning dresses to specific London makers and giving each model the name of a genuine Regency actress, something felt incomplete: the narrative. Overlaying Grimm’s original text onto the images completed the homage beautifully.
